Quickly work out the VAT on any price.
Enter an amount and choose whether VAT is already included. You'll see the price before VAT, the VAT amount and the total, making it easy to check figures or give a customer an all-in price.
Worth knowing
The standard rate of VAT is 20%, but different rates can apply to certain types of work. Some residential and energy-saving work may qualify for a reduced or zero rate, so check the current HMRC guidance rather than assuming which rate applies.
Working backwards from a VAT-inclusive price catches plenty of people out. If the total is £120 including VAT at 20%, the price before VAT is £100 and the VAT is £20. You can’t simply deduct 20% from £120.
You should only add VAT to your prices if you’re VAT registered. Businesses must register once they meet HMRC’s VAT registration requirements, although you can also choose to register voluntarily if you’re below the threshold.
This calculator is here to help with the figures, not provide tax advice. VAT rules and thresholds can change, so check anything important against current HMRC guidance or speak to your accountant.
